T20 WC preparations: Afridi asks team to work harder

While urging the senior team members to set examples for their juniors, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Monday stressed his brigade needs to enhance its level in all departments of the game to defend the World Twenty20 crown in the Caribbean.

“The boys are working hard in the camp. But I still believe they need improvement in running between the wickets, and in other departments too. I’ll talk to coach Waqar Younis in this regard,” Afridi told reporters.

The camp is in progress at the Gaddafi Stadium for the World Twenty20 scheduled to start in the West Indies from April 30.

As captain, Afridi said, he wanted to lead from the front which could inspire his team members.

“I believe the seniors always have to perform if they want any good performance from their juniors. And similarly, the captain is the first one to perform to inspire the seniors as well as juniors,” he stated, underlining his bowling, for the last two years, had played more important role for the team compared to his batting.

Asked if the players, who were imposed cash fines by the PCB inquiry committee over the Australia tour debacle, were focussed on cricket, Afridi said it was creating some problems in the beginning, adding but now they all were concentrating on the World Twenty20 contest.

Afridi, among the seven cricketers punished, supported the PCB move of penalising the players for their indiscipline cases cropped up in Australia.

“The PCB took the right decision as the players were handed punishments for their wrongdoing,” the captain said.

Afridi, who was also fined Rs3 million by the PCB after being banned by the ICC for two T20 games due to his ball-biting act during the last One-day International against Australia in Perth, asserted he would not hire any lawyer to defend his case in court.

“I have no plans to defend the case through any lawyer. I’ve only asked the PCB to explain whether I can be penalised twice for the same act of indiscipline,” the captain said.
